Namsrai - God of Wealth

Bisman tengri (Mongolian)

Namsrai is a guard of the religion (tshoijn sakhuis). He keeps people from poverty, guarantees love and all the fine things, frees people who are in troubles, in a dangerous situation, he helps people who are hungry, poor and impoverished. He abolishes reasons for the bad and gives all good reasons to be living happily. He is responsible for the people's hopes and wishes..

Meaning:
- The God of Wealth is the figure of the Kubera or Vaishravana adopted from the Indian Pantheon. In Japanese Buddhism he is known as Bishman-ten (one of the seven Gods of Fortune). In Lamaism he belongs to the "Dreadful Killers". He lives in the mountain range Kangchendzönga in Sikkim.

Characteristics:

  • - yellow, golden or brick-red face colour (in colour symbolism yellow stands for luck and long life)
  • - head of a "Wild God", but with mild facial expression
  • - crown with five jags and emblems instead of skulls and an aureole behind
  • - long costume with rich ornamentation; he often wears a suit of armour

Attributes:
- In one hand he holds an "Ichneumon" spewing jewels (symbol of wealth) or royal insignia, in the other one he holds the jewel fulfilling wishes.

Dance:
- With only slight movements. In Mongolia he dances around his treasure pot and gives his blessing.
